We have been sanctioned funds under the Global COE Program by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan (MEXT) for five years from 2007.
The present Global COE Program*2 under the heading “Center of Excellence for Interdisciplinary Studies on Environmental Chemistry” aims at forming an intellectual center to perform advanced research and to expound knowledge on environmental sciences of chemical pollution. For achieving this goal, we are effectively utilizing the academic and research oriented facilities which have been built up and promoted by the long travail under the 21st COE Program*1 from 2002 to 2006 at the Center for Marine Environmental Studies (CMES), Ehime University.

Jul. 2, 2010   In the present study, we determined the residue levels and patterns of PCB and OH-PCB congeners, and examined correlations between OH-PCB metabolites and parent PCBs in the blood from eight species of toothed whales and three species of baleen whales stranded along the Japanese coast. As the results, it revealed that the accumulation profiles of OH-PCBs in cetacean blood are clearly different from the profiles found in other mammals. This study is the first report to comprehensively document the accumulation profiles of OH-PCBs in cetaceans. Please click here for further details. NEW!

*1 21st Century COE Program is a project of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan (MEXT). This program was established in 2002 to cultivate a competitive academic environment among Japanese Universities by providing financial support for the creation of world-standard research and education bases (Centers of Excellence). By raising the standard of both education and research at these centers, the program sought to elevate Japanese universities to the world’s highest echelons, while fostering people of high talent and creativity and helped them to assume roles as world-class leaders.
*2 Global COE Program started in 2007 is an ambitious project of the MEXT, which follows the principal philosophy of 21st Century COE Program. The program will provide financial support for establishing education and research centers that excel globally, in order to elevate the academic competitiveness of Japanese universities to international level. The program will strengthen and enhance education and research functions of graduate schools and foster creative young researchers who will grow as world-class leaders in their respective fields.
