Miss Ana Catarina Almeida Sousa is a researcher at CESAM
(Center for Environmental and Marine Studies) and
Department of Biology, University of Aveiro, Portugal.
Under the supervision of Professor Shinsuke Tanabe, she
visits regularly the Center for Marine Environmental
Studies (CMES) in Ehime University where she conducts
organotin analysis in samples collected from Portugal, a
nuclear component of her work towards the awarding of a
Ph.D. degree. Her thesis focuses on the determination of
environmental levels of organotins along the Portuguese
coast and the establishment of associated effects on
mollusk’s sterilization phenomena. In this context, she
presented a communication entitled “Contribution of
organic tin compounds to total tin levels in mussels
collected along the Portuguese Coast” at the
International Conference SEASINK2008, held in Porto,
Portugal during June 2008. The communication won the
award for “Best Oral Presentation”. Items under
evaluation (performed by the Congress Scientific
Committee) consisted: consistency of the objectives of
the study; quality of the description of the materials
and methods section; global results and conclusions;
scientific relevance and the presentation performance.
This award is one of the many successful outcomes of the
partnership established between CESAM in Aveiro
University and CMES in Ehime University.
