- The level of presentation and discussions were very high. I
was impressed by the achievements of G-COE members and students
of Ehime University. Especially, the research outputs on
emerging pollutants were world- class.
|
- The es-BANK is one of the excellent examples of
world-class research at G-COE. Its state-of-the-art facilitates
and achieved specimens enable scientists to trace the pollution
history of old and emerging pollutants.
|
- CMES features an excellent and effective multidisciplinary
combination of resources of environmental chemistry, toxicology,
hydrology and modeling. Upon the award of the G-COE program,
CMES has expanded impressively in the context of international
collaboration, and, as a result, has readily become of an
extraordinary international center for environmental sciences.
|
- An environmental scientist network including 40 overseas
scientists was successfully established and has been very active
and fruitful in collaboration research. High standard scientific
symposia were held frequently at Ehime.
|
- I continue to be impressed with the COE program, and commend
your government for supporting such an amazing program. This
program offers a unique learning opportunity for young
scientists from across the globe including many Asian and
African countries. The focus on gathering much needed
information on marine pollution and the transport of
contaminants in the Pacific and Indian Oceans will provide an
incredible wealth of information from which much will be
learned.

- Environmental scientists societies in Asia are lack of
funding and human resources compare to North American and
European societies. So this network is an excellent idea to
utilize these limited resources. But the current network is more
vertical structure than horizontal. So I would like to recommend
inviting other scientists in developed Asian and Oceanian-counties.

- I would like to congratulate you and your team for
organizing and hosting a successful Symposium. The entire
organization, from the preparations to the execution of the
Symposium was excellent, and I commend you for having dedicated
staff and students who worked together very efficiently.

- I would like to congratulate your outstanding achievements
of your G-COE program. The research facility especially the
analytical equipment is world class, and the program addresses
the global marine environmental problems in the next few
decades.

- Both the oral presentations and posters in the scientific
program were of exceptional high standard and forefront in
environmental toxicology.
|
- During my visit to the es-BANK and laboratory, I
was impressed with the standard and well-equipped facilities of
the es-BANK as well as the laboratory of CMES. I
personally agree that the university is by far competent to be a
Center of Excellence for Interdisciplinary Studies on
Environmental Chemistry.

- According to the result and output both of the oral
presentation and poster presentation, I am certain that the
young researchers are well-trained from the expert staff of the
Program. The young researchers are the excellent example of good
support of Ehime University.

【コメント】報告書では、イベント等にウェイトが置かれているように見える。若手研究者の実効性ある資質向上を図るためには、たとえばトレーニングコース、論文校閲教室、「若手の会」など実質部分のさらなる充実が必要であろう。 |

【回答】若手研究者に準備された、イベント以外の恒常的なプログラムを以下に挙げる。 |
- 英語トレーニングコース
若手研究者(PD、ドクターコースの学生)には、週一度の、ビギナーコース、あるいはアドバンスコースの英語教育プログラムが準備されている。自身のスキルの応じて自由に選択できるこれらのコースでは、グループ形式の会話（ビギナーコース）や、短時間の口頭発表練習（両コース）、あるいはプレゼンテーションのためのノウハウ習得（アドバンスコース）などが、二人の講師の指導のもとに行われている。
受講者は、講師に直接はもちろんのこと、身近な教員にコースの改善を申し入れることができる。これまでにも、自身の研究活動に支障をきたすほどの長時間講義やホームワークを避けること、一度欠席しても復帰しやすい程度に毎週の講義に独立性を持たせることが申し入れられ、講師と担当教員との間で内容の改善について話し合う機会が持たれた。 - 論文校閲教室
若手研究者は、Subramanian特命教授へ英文論文の校閲を依頼するよう推奨されている。校閲後に同教授は当事者と話し合う機会を持ち、ライティングのスキルアップのためにマンツーマンの指導を行う。ただし、これまでのプログラム利用者数を勘案したところ、若手研究者に対しプログラムの利用方法が十分に周知されているとは言い難く、現在、周知のためのアナウンスを繰り返し行っているところである。 - 若手研究費
若手研究費支援を企画し、一件につき100万円程度の研究費を競争的研究資金として配分している。申請課題設定については、他分野の若手との共同研究を推奨しており、競争力の強化や視野の拡大に繋がることを期待している。また、若手の自主的な勉強会「若手の会」を通して、相互の専門や特技、人間性などについて理解を深めていることも、このような共同研究を推進する一助となっている。 - 若手の会の活動状況
PD・DC（一部のCOE准教授や助教を含む）など若手研究員は、自発的に行っている月一度の勉強会(若手の会特別セミナー；以降、若手の会)の中で、研究紹介などを通して意見交換・相互理解を図っている。また、上記の英語トレーニングコースに対する申し入れなど、各種プログラムに対する要望を集約し教員に伝達する機能も果たしている。さらには、今後、若手会独自のwebページ開設やニュースレターへの活動報告掲載を通じて、会の活動をオープンにしていくことが計画されている。さらにはGCOEセミナーでの講師選定や招へいに、若手の会から積極的な提案を行うことも検討中である。

【コメント】この事業では若手研究者の養成が最重要課題になっているが、教育研究拠点が特定の研究科・専攻と対応しているわけではないので、どの若手が養成対象となるのか自明ではない。常識的に言えば、事業推進担当者が指導しているDC学生、ポスドクが対象候補であろうが、実際はどうなっているのか。また、修士課程・博士前期課程の学生の扱いは。本人の自覚の涵養という面から、ある程度早くから養成対象者を明確にしておく必要はないか。 |
【回答】
CMESでは、若手研究者を最初から研究室の一員として受け入れる体制であり、事業推進担当者の養成対象は早くから明確であると認識している。当然、他研究室構成員との活発な議論は推奨されるべき（前項４の「若手会の活動状況」参照のこと）であり、このような体制は、若手研究者を一研究室に閉じ込めるものではない。
PD・DCの教育・育成はCOEの重要な目標の一つであるが、優秀な若手研究者を育成するべく、当GCOE事業では修士課程時点からの養成も重視している。各種セミナーやシンポジウム、英語ゼミなどのイベントは、修士課程の学生にもオープンにされており、それらに参加することで、博士課程進学のモチベーションが高揚することを期待している。 |
